He was sent over with a chemical warfare company taking poison gas to Dunkirk, but because intelligence said Hitler would not use chemical warfare, the Allies did not either.
He next volunteered for the commandos, and carried out several raids with them, but was with the Royal Engineers for D-Day.
He said: "It was pretty rough. We went in with the Canadians.
"We went in first to clean up the booby traps and the mines for those following us. The beaches were full of them."
Mr Johnson is in France for the D-Day commemoration and will also go back for a reunion of players from a football match between the Royal Engineers and the team from the town of Couselles.
