THE ROLE OF THE REGIA AERONAUTICA 1940-1943
Italy entered World War II on June 10, 1940 with a declaration of war against France. The German Blitzkrieg in Western Europe was well underway and the outcome in France was not in question.
The RA was involved in reconnaissance flights in Southern France and a number of attacks on French airfields. The French surrendered on June 24. The two week war wasn't much of a test for the RA.

France vs. Italy (Jun-40)
Seeing France quickly falling to Germany, Mussolini decided Italy must grab a part of the Glory - quickly before the game could end. Mussolini ordered the Italian military into action against French units in the Medit and across the rather mountainous frontier.
The ground assaults were not very efffective. The air assaults less so.
After a few days, the air attacks ceased, and more due to the German pressure than anything else, France signed an Armistice with Italy at the same time as Germany.
When Italy joined the war in 1940 its air force had nearly 1,000 bombers, of which well over half were Savoia-Marchetti S.M.79 Sparviero (Hawk) medium bombers. These trimotors, were thought by many to be among the best land-based torpedo bombers of the war. They could carry 1,250 kg (2,750 lb) of bombs internally or two torpedoes. Also active as a medium bomber around the Mediterranean and on anti-ship duties was the Cant Z.1007bis Alcione (Kingfisher) ,production of which began in 1939. It also was a trimotor, powered by 1,000 hp Piaggio radials, and it carried four machine guns for self-defense as well as up to 2,000 kg (4,410 lb) of bombs or two torpedoes.
