King Tiger / Tiger II Heavy Tank
Patton Museum of Cavalry and Armor, Fort Knox KY
Built in 1944 - chassis serial number 243. Issued to 3rd Company, 501st SS sPzAbt in late 1944. Sustained damage by aircraft attack sometime prior to its capture in December of 1944. Damage was partially repaired by the Germans. Vehicle was abandoned under fire on Christmas Morning 1944 near the little village of Petit Coo Belgium and captured by elements of the 740th Tank Battalion soon afterwards. Vehicle was recovered on 26 DEC 1944 by the 463rd Ordnance Evacuation Company and taken to Spa Belgium. Within the next month the tank was inspected by Ordnance Technical Inspection Team #1 (First US Army) and identified for shipment to Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG). Arrived in Baltimore Maryland USA in February of 1945 and then was shipped by Rail to APG. Test by the US Army Ordnance Department, then turned over to the US Army Ordnance Museum around 1947. Subsequently cut open for exhibit. Transferred to Patton Museum in 1991.
