During Dunkerque trials the dispersion of 330mm was discovered. Depending on the range it was found to be between 200 and 1,100m which was considered enormous and unacceptable by the CinC.
The cause was traced in the faulty design, as you know. Shell's wake disturbed the neighbour one to unexpected extend. To get things worse, the quad turret had been designed as if two twin turrets had been put together on the same mount, thus the uneven spacing of the riffles (compare with the KGV quad turrets with equal spacing). This arrangement was chosen to speed delay and spare money on the design stage and it was not considered risky (in term of dispersion) because it was an improvement of former smaller calibre designs with good performances.
But as the calibre grew, the defect went bigger.
