LEAD SQUADRON LST B C BG
The missiontook off as briefed with the exception thatthe Group Lead and theDeputy Group Lead tock off about twenty minutes late due to the Gee-H datebeing wrong. Both aircraft took off wit hout thair Gee -H operators because the date wes for the wrong target.TheDeputy Lead aircraft arrived ad the buncher about fifteen minutes before departure time and at assemblyaltitude There were no Baker aircraft in sight.
Received three calls from the Lead aircraft but wes usable to contact the Lead in answer. The higt Squadron alec received severel cal le from the lead but wes alec unable to contact him;About four minutes before deperture time the Deputy stated contacting the formation and fiving yellow yellow flaves and told the formation to formon his aircraft at assembly altitude and two angels.The formation started pulling in on the Deputy Aircraft and the Baker Group departed the buncher seventee minutes lats . The Lead Aircraft never did get te the formation.
The group preceeded directly to the division assembly line on a route jhat teekthen over Beachy Xead. They breke into the assembly line alightly north of Control Point 2 nine minutes late .Thayhit Control Point 3 eight minutes late .Betwen Control Point 3 and Control Point 4 it was necessary to de a 360 turn because a nother group that theh were frllewing turned into the Baker formation and the contrails were se bad that it wes impossible te S behind thime Control Point 4 and the target were about fifteen minutes late ; The complet route into the target was flowin south of course ; Contact were dense and persistent.
The run into the target was made 1,000 feet abore briefed altitude due to a clound formationat bombing altitude .The bombing run wes made by squadron in the follewing dequence:Lead,High and Low . The High followed the Leed into the target because his Mickey was net opérating and te wented to drop on the Lead's Sacke Harkers,After the Lead dropped their bombs and turned off the target,the High Squadron cought up to therm immediately,but the Lead S quadrondid notsee the Low Squadron any more The flak over the target was modevale and accurate.
After the turn off the target there was no aircraft from any of the efher formations to be seen .
The route backhome wes flown north of the briefed course.
Radio message receivedfrom Division that weather over England wes very bad and a message received over V H F not to drop below reference and two Devils untilthe base ares wes reached The lead Sqadron returned to the home base by wes of Control Point1 the formation came into the home base below the overcast at an altitude of five hundied feet.
No enemy A/C were sen and there were none of the Baker formationlost due to enemy opposition Flak was encountered shortly before the target and as the formation was turning off the target .It wes moderate and accuate.
LOW SQUADRON IST B G
The low Lead and Deputy took off es riefed Upon reaching assembly altitude theare werre no Beker aircraft to be found. Contact could not be made with Sword fish beberlead A bout five minutes before departure time Baker Deputy toock over the assembly departure was made 17 minutes late and heading was taker for control point 1 Since departure was solde a new heading wastakenfor control point 2 Control point two was cached nine minutes late and control point 3 about seven minutes late.
Just before the I P a360 degres dur wes made to fall in behing a nother group wich was turning into out formation.
The higt squadron called saying their Mickey was and so they went over the target seend and the low sqadronmade a run on the secondary P F T target wich toos us quite a distance lo the right of th e Lead and hight Squadron and due to beay centrails there were no ether formations to be seen
heavy tracking flak was encontered on the turn off the target.
After reaching friendly territory all but eight of the Low Squadron air craft left the formation due to low fuel supply. About a halfhour later three more aircraft had to leawe due to lew fuel supply.
No ennemy air craft wer encountered and none of the Baker Low aircraft were lost to ennemy action . One Third Division aircraft bombed with Low Squadron Marking Wes a square B.
HIGH SQUADRON LAST B CBG
Take off was normal al tough several minutes late Assembly altitude was 18, 000 feet and at a new buncher to the sorth. The group lead did net take off until trouble it was impossible for them to assemble the group The Deputy finaly made the assembly and we left the boncher 17 minutes late.
Climbwas normal at an airspeed alightly over S.O.P. Our Mickey set was not funcienning properly and hight Squadron was there fome to take number interval ever the target witth the low squadron taking number 3 interval Squadronwas to drop thair bombs on the leads make marker.
The lead flow post both primary and secondary targets with tout druping its bombs. The continued to the worth until southern edge of the Frankfurt flak area was moderate and acurate. The lead not yet dropping its bombs wade approximiately a 135 degres turm to the left. Assording to the navigators D.R. position squadron then proceded over the Ludwigshafen flak area were flak was intense and acurate. At this point our gas supply was very low and it was imperative that bombs be drapped before reaching our own lines. The lead still hat not drapped its bombs Group was still over ansay territory so high sqaudron dropped their bombs High Sqaudron landend at an flight air force emergency field in france because of low supply of feul.
